LISBON — Cristiano Ronaldo has called it a day on his international career. It's the end of a 23 year journey for the Portugal international which has seen him win European glory, rewrite the record books and score an incredible 146 goals in 234 appearances.
The 41-year-old forward confirmed his departure on social media on Thursday rather than in the glare of the stadium lights following a row with Portugal manager Jorge Jesus. The rift over Ronaldo's role came to a head when Jesus chose not to field him in the recent match against Norway, highlighting the growing divide between the veteran captain's desire to play and the direction the national team was being taken.
Ronaldo leaves the global game as the all-time leading goalscorer and the all-time record holder in terms of caps for men's international football. He was absolutely central to Portugal's ascent to the level of world title contenders, winning their first major tournament at Euro 2016 and going on to win the UEFA Nations League in both 2019 and 2025.
His international career kicked off in August 2003 against Kazakhstan as an 18 year old winger. Grief came very quickly at Euro 2004 with the heartbreak of a home final defeat to Greece, and then 12 years later in Paris with a very different kind of tears. An early knee injury saw Ronaldo out of the Euro 2016 final against France, though his team were able to pull off a magnificent 1-0 win and his captain was barking orders from the technical area.

The World Cup was still his ultimate goal. In six different World Cups he scored 11 goals (10 in the group stages, 1 in the knockout stages, a penalty against Croatia in the 2026 round of 32). Portugal's run at the 2026 World Cup in North America came to an end with a defeat to eventual winners Spain in the round of 16.
Ronaldo has lived in the shadow of questions about his place in the side since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and that shadow has only deepened during the scoreless run to the quarter-finals at Euro 2024. The Norway omission was the final straw.
The quietness of his departure is the complete opposite of Lionel Messi's exit, which was as much a celebration as anything. Messi was in Buenos Aires in October soaking up the adulation of his home fans after guiding Argentina to another World Cup final. The Portuguese Football Federation have issued a statement to that effect, thanking Ronaldo for his immense contribution and saying that he absolutely deserves the honour.
5 Ballons d'Or, 5 Champions League medals and over 980 senior goals between Sporting, Man Utd, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al Nassr means his legacy is absolutely secure. He came onto the international stage when Portugal had zero major trophies and he leaves with a completely different international profile.
