Portuguese football often follows traditions, but Roberto Martinez changed things at the Cidade do Futebol.
He stood before a full, sceptical auditorium on Tuesday and announced a 27-man squad list that looks less like a typical roster and more like a big risk. At the centre is a 41-year-old legend. Cristiano Ronaldo is going to his sixth World Cup.
Think about that. At an age when most legends have retired, Ronaldo is ready to compete in another World Cup. He made it clear that he leads this team. Age does not matter when you have his stature.
But the real story wasn’t just about the current players. It was about the loss that affects this whole campaign.
Martinez called his roster "27 players plus one." That plus one is Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward, who tragically died in a horrific car crash last July at just 28 years old. It’s a wound that clearly hasn't healed in the Portuguese locker room. "He is our strength, our joy," Martinez told the press, his usual polished veneer cracking just a bit. They are carrying Jota’s dream to the States, to Mexico, to Canada. It’s a heavy emotional anchor for a tournament that punishes the weak.
And make no mistake, the logistics alone will be brutal.
Portugal will be in Group K, starting against the Democratic Republic of the Congo on June 17 in Houston's heat. Then it's Uzbekistan in Texas on June 23, before ending against Colombia in Miami. Martinez knows the conditions will be hard for any team that isn't ready. That’s why he selected extra defenders and four goalkeepers for the trip.
Naturally, the knives came out immediately. The Lisbon press is already bleeding ink over the snubs. Mateus Fernandes, Ricardo Horta, and Pedro Goncalves—all left out in the cold.
Martinez defended his choices by stressing versatility. He’s relying on players like Diogo Dalot and Joao Cancelo in multiple roles and expects Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva to control midfield.
Then there’s the bizarre case of Ricardo Velho. The Genclerbirligi Ankara keeper is travelling as a glorified training dummy, a fourth-string insurance policy who can only see the official pitch if one of the top three snaps a bone. Martinez says Velho knows the deal. It’s a thankless job, but someone has to catch the shots in practice.
The tournament kicks off on June 11. By July 19, we’ll know whether Martinez is a tactical genius or just built a circus around a 41-year-old king and a tragic memory. Either way, it’s going to be wild.
