Juventus And Roma Stumble As Lazio Climb To Top Of Serie A

Lazio topped the Serie A standings on Sunday. They defeated Monza 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico to match Inter Milan on 16 points. The victory proved crucial as title rivals Roma, Juventus, and AC Milan all failed to win their respective weekend fixtures.

Gennaro Gattuso watched Lazio dominate early on. Nuno Tavares opened the scoring in the 3rd minute with a powerful shot into the roof of the net. Gustav Isaksen added a second in the first half, driving a first-time strike from the edge of the box into the far bottom corner. Monza's task became even harder when the ref sent off Lorenzo Lucchesi 10 minutes before the interval.

Lazio lost their way after the break. Dany Mota flicked a corner on to Saba Goglichidze, who headed it past Mandas in the 46th minute. Monza pressed the home side throughout, and Mandas was called upon several times to stop Mota's direct efforts. Andrea Pinamonti finally got one back for Lazio with a close-range finish in the closing two minutes.

"We can't afford to play as we did in the second half," Gattuso told the media. "We shouldn't be trying to manage the game. We need to keep doing things the right way."

Roma trail the leaders by two points after a scoreless draw at Como. Mile Svilar was out through injury. Pierluigi Gollini made his first league appearance since January 2025 and stopped an early chip from Nico Paz. Lorenzo Pellegrini hit the post at the other end. The game changed completely when Roma lost Donyell Malen to a red card in the 53rd minute. Como attacked from that point on. Tasos Douvikas hit the side netting, and Gollini made another excellent save from Paz to keep Roma in the game. It was the first scoreless match of the season.

AC Milan remain unbeaten but conceded a second-half lead to draw 1-1 at Sassuolo. Sassuolo keeper Arijanet Muric was called upon to stop shots from Goncalo Ramos, Diego Moreira and Strahinja Pavlovic to keep the first half scoreless. Luka Modric came on. The Croatian midfielder found Adrien Rabiot, who scored from a tight angle in the 63rd minute. The lead lasted just five minutes as Cas Odenthal scored past Mike Maignan in the penalty area following a corner. Milan are fifth in the table with 12 points.

Cagliari and Juventus drew 1-1 in a match which ended in a complete mess. Cagliari had won four of their first five games. Daniel Maldini put them in front in the 20th minute. Juventus pulled one back in the 81st minute via a cross from Kerim Alajbegovic to Randal Kolo Muani (Muani's first league goal of the season). The final whistle was immediately followed by controversy, with both managers receiving red cards after a furious post-match argument. Both sides now have 11 points.
